Rahma Omar: Breaking Barriers in Welding
Rahma Omar, hailing from Garissa town, made history as the first and only female welder from her community to be sponsored by the International Labour Organization (ILO) under the PROSPECTS initiative. Through a six-month dual training program at the East African Institute of Welding (EAIW), she mastered advanced welding techniques, earning certifications aligned with international standards (ISO 9606) and national qualifications, including TVET CDACC Level 4 Welding and Fabrication Qualification.
Upon completing her training, Rahma secured an internship at Simba Cement in Nairobi. Her exceptional skills and dedication led to a full-time employment offer, marking a significant milestone not only in her personal career but also in challenging gender norms within the welding industry. Rahma’s journey serves as an inspiration to many young women in Garissa and beyond, demonstrating that with the right opportunities and determination, barriers can be broken.
William Loroo: Innovating for Accessibility
William Loroo from Turkana, a member of the disabled community, participated in the ILO-sponsored welding training program. During his training, he focused on designing and fabricating affordable walking aids and custom-made wheelchairs tailored to the needs of his community. His innovative approach not only provided essential mobility solutions but also empowered other individuals with disabilities in Turkana. William’s work exemplifies how vocational training can be harnessed to address specific community challenges, fostering inclusivity and self-reliance.
Emmanuel Esekon: Building a Business from the Ground Up
Emmanuel Esekon, also from Turkana, was sponsored by the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Foundation to undergo welding training. After completing the program, he received a starter kit, enabling him to establish a welding workshop in his village. Through hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, Emmanuel transformed his workshop into a profitable business, securing tenders from the county government and contributing to local infrastructure projects. His success story highlights the potential of vocational training to spur economic development and self-employment in marginalized regions.
Felix Kiplimo: From Rural Kenya to Canada’s Engineering Sector
Felix Kiplimo’s journey from a modest village in Kenya to the industrial hubs of Canada is a testament to perseverance, family sacrifice, and the transformative power of vocational training.
Felix pursued and obtained the ISO 9606 certification, a standard that qualifies welders for international projects. Academia
Armed with his certification and unwavering determination, Felix set his sights on Canada, a country known for its robust engineering and manufacturing sectors. Upon arrival, he secured part-time employment in the welding industry, leveraging his ISO 9606 certification to demonstrate his proficiency and commitment to quality.
Balancing work and education, Felix enrolled in a mechanical engineering program, further enhancing his technical expertise. His dual focus on practical skills and academic knowledge allowed him to contribute meaningfully to his workplace while advancing his career prospects.
